Victoria Baths Series
These assemblages are a series of 16 pieces created in response to the surfaces, textures and deep, rich colours of the iconic Victoria Baths in Manchester. The work began as tiles directly influenced by the spaces in the baths. For instance, Victoria Baths 1, focussed on the blue and rusts of the cubicles with their peeling paint. As they developed, the rich turquoises, blues, ochres and emeralds were retained but the work increasingly responded to the notion of restoration and the materials of construction. Textures became more prominent and diverse, reflecting corrugation, sandpapered, matt and gloss surfaces… Perspex has been screwed protectively over elements of some, BSI type codes introduced.
A connection with the preceding Urban Print series with its interest in city architecture, the meshes, nets, columns and spheres of contemporary construction and redevelopment began to emerge.
