Painting Sound

In this  body of work, I have channeled the mood and rhythm of personally resonant, powerful music into colours and marks. Often working with the music on repeat, I select materials and colours in the moment, responding to sound and rhythm. Interested in the idea of a universal language of mark which we grasp subconsciously,  I allowed the marks to develop intuitively, according to the music’s emotional content. Would these marks confirm this notion?

Most pieces have been made in one session.  Whilst Ode to Joy induced swooping, rising, curved marks and broad whirls, passages of blue and glowing yellows; Lontano, sombre and moody called for darker greys and deep reds. For The Beat spray paint lent a retro feel whilst the  searingly tender Spiegel im Spiegel, with its almost unbearable beauty became a procession of rhythmic, soft verticals in blues and greys.

The scale of these works is intentionally enveloping.
